Honey-Sweetened 5-Ingredient Chocolate Chip Cookies

A made-from-scratch favorite that even my six-year-old can make

There are few things I love more than pulling a warm tray of cookies out of the oven. The smell of butter and honey filling the house feels like a little act of grace… something so small and ordinary, yet full of joy. But for years, I hardly ever made cookies. Not because I didn’t love them, but because the idea of baking always felt like too much... enter: this 5-ingredient chocolate chip cookies recipe.

If you’ve ever opened your recipe book and felt instantly overwhelmed by the long list of ingredients – white sugar, brown sugar, cornstarch, eggs, vanilla, multiple types of flour, and three kinds of chocolate – you know what I mean. By the time I dug everything out, my counters were covered, the kids were restless, and I was already tired.

But then one day I realized something so simple it almost felt silly: all cookies are just variations of the same four things. It’s just fat, sugar, flour, and baking soda.

That’s it.

Butter (or oil or lard) for richness.
Sugar (or honey, maple, or molasses) for sweetness.
Flour to hold it all together.
And baking soda to give it the right lift.

When that truth finally clicked, baking stopped feeling like a chore and started feeling peaceful again. I wasn’t following complicated instructions anymore; I was simply learning the rhythm of these four ingredients – how they work together, how to balance them, how to enjoy the process. It was liberating.

5-ingredient chocolate chip cookies, sweetened with honey

There’s something deeply satisfying about learning the basics and realizing you don’t need much to make something wonderful. It reminds me of how God works in our lives. He takes the simple and makes it abundant.

When Jesus fed the five thousand, He didn’t start with a feast. He started with five loaves and two fish. (John 6:9-13) He took what seemed small, almost laughably insufficient, and made it enough for everyone. That’s how I feel about this cookie recipe. It isn’t fancy. It’s just a few ordinary ingredients: butter, honey, flour, a pinch of baking soda, and chocolate. But somehow, when they’re mixed together, they become something beautiful.

Baking like this feels slower, quieter, more intentional. There’s a rhythm to softening butter, stirring in honey, and hearing that gentle clink of a wooden spoon in a bowl. My six-year-old can make these cookies almost entirely by himself now, and it’s one of my favorite things to watch. He lines up the ingredients on the counter, measures with serious concentration, and sneaks a chocolate chip (or 12).

It reminds me that homemaking isn’t about perfection; it’s about participation. It’s about inviting little hands and little hearts into the work, even if it’s messy, even if the cookies aren’t uniform. Proverbs 31:27 says, “She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.” There’s joy in tending to the simple things – in nourishing our homes with sweetness, laughter, and the smell of cookies baking in the oven.
